what does 8:30 pm military time mean?

Military time is quite different from the traditional twelve-hour clock system. Instead of two twelve-hour periods, military time uses a 24-hour clock, meaning that 8:30 pm in military time would be written as 20:30.

In military time, the day runs from midnight (00:00 hours) to 23:59 hours, which is just short of 24 hours. This means that hours after noon have the first two digits increasing by one for every hour. For instance, 1 pm would be 13:00 hours, 2 pm would be 14:00 hours and so on. When it comes to 8:30 pm on a regular 12-hour clock system, it would correspond to 20:30 hours in military time.

Another thing to remember when converting between 12-hour and 24-hour formats is that there is no need to add "pm" or "am" after each hour. In contrast to the traditional clock system, military time does not use those designations at all which makes it easier for some people.

Conversion between 12-hour and 24-hour times can seem complicated at first but with some practice it will become easier. What's more, being able to recognize and convert between these two formats can come in handy in certain professions such as law enforcement and emergency services or even in certain business forms such as retail where opening times are often listed using the military format.
